Our Mission

DogFoodCostCalc was created to help dog owners make informed decisions about their pet's nutrition without the confusion of complicated calculations or hidden costs. We believe every dog deserves quality food, and every owner deserves to know exactly what they're paying for.

Since launching in 2024, we've helped over 50,000 monthly visitors calculate accurate food costs across 50+ dog breeds and 15 major food brands. Our mission goes beyond simple cost estimation — we want to:

  • Budget realistically for monthly pet food expenses.
  • Feed appropriately based on each dog's unique traits and caloric needs.
  • Avoid financial surprises that cause stress for pet families.

We also believe in transparency about pet food pricing. The dog food industry is a $50 billion global market with complex pricing structures, marketing-driven tier systems, and often misleading label claims. Our role is to cut through that noise with clear, veterinary-backed information. We help owners compare brands fairly, whether you're budgeting for a new puppy or switching brands for an adult dog.

Who We Are

We're a team of dog lovers who experienced firsthand the confusion of trying to budget for a new puppy. Between different brands, breed-specific formulas, and varying activity levels, calculating the true cost of dog food felt impossible. We built this calculator to solve that problem.

Our team brings a wealth of diverse experience to this site:

  • Certified pet nutrition consultants and data analysts.
  • Over 40 years of collective experience caring for dogs of all sizes and breeds.
  • Firsthand knowledge feeding dogs on budgets from $20 to over $200 per month.

This breadth of experience gives us a practical perspective that pure academic research cannot — we know what actually works for real owners in real households.

Our Methodology and Expertise

Our calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, the gold standard in veterinary nutrition:

RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75

This base figure is then adjusted for:

  • Activity level - Sedentary (1.2x), Moderate (1.5x), Active (1.7x), Working/Sport (2.0-2.5x)
  • Life stage - Puppies need 1.6-2x adult calories; seniors need 0.8-0.9x
  • Food brand - Different brands have different caloric densities

Veterinary Oversight

Dr. Sarah Mitchell is our lead consultant. She holds an MSc in Animal Nutrition and is a Certified Pet Food Advisor (CPFA). Dr. Mitchell has over 12 years of experience. She has worked with major pet food manufacturers on formulation and quality assurance, bringing insider knowledge to every calculation on this site.

Her expertise ensures that our cost estimates are grounded in real nutritional science, not marketing assumptions. All content on DogFoodCostCalc is reviewed by Dr. Mitchell before publication, and we update our methodology as new research emerges in veterinary nutrition.

How We Collect Price Data

Our pricing data is gathered from three major retailers (Chewy.com, Amazon, and PetSmart) on a monthly basis. We track price changes for every brand and bag size we reference, and we note the last verification date on each estimate.

When prices diverge significantly between retailers, we note the range so you know what to expect. We also track seasonal sales patterns and subscription pricing so our cost estimates reflect what you'll actually pay, not just the MSRP. All caloric density figures are sourced directly from manufacturer packaging and verified against manufacturer websites quarterly.

Editorial Review Process

Every breed page is reviewed by our nutrition consultant before publication. Cost calculations are verified against current retail pricing monthly, and caloric requirements are cross-referenced with:

  • AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines
  • AKC (American Kennel Club) breed-specific feeding recommendations
  • Merck Veterinary Manual energy requirement standards
